Singapore-based Meranti Green Steel (MGS) has announced it has awarded a major Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) contract for its planned 2.5 million tonnes per annum direct reduction (DR) plant located in Duqm city in Oman.
The order was snapped up by a consortium of Germany-based SMS Group, a leading provider of plant construction and mechanical engineering services for the metals industry, and Midrex Technologies, a global leader in DR technology with headquarters in North Carolina, US.
SMS and Midrex are key partners in the green steel revolution. Through a strategic consortium, they design, supply and build cutting-edge direct reduced iron (DRI) and melt shop plants that transition traditional blast furnace steelmaking to hydrogen-based production and slashing CO₂ emissions by up to 95%.
Their landmark collaborative projects and technologies include Midrex DR plants which have now become the industry standard for producing high-quality DRI, utilising natural gas, any mixture of natural gas and hydrogen, or pure green hydrogen (such as the Midrex Flex and Midrex H2 technologies).
On the contract award, Meranti Green Steel said its plant will use Midrex Flex technology, a proven direct reduction platform designed to operate on a mix of natural gas and green hydrogen, with a transition toward higher levels of green hydrogen as supply scales.
This supports the Singaporean steel major’s transition pathway - competitive, low-carbon ironmaking from the start, with a route to reduce emissions further over time.
The work with SMS and Midrex will establish the technical foundation for the next stage of engineering and supply for the plant, marking an important step toward the group’s final investment decision.-TradeArabia News Service
